The Mayan and Aztec people included chia seeds in their daily diet. Today, chia seeds have become very popular, with many branding them as one of the healthiest foods on the planet. Even popular celebrities are jumping onto the bandwagon, most notably Oprah.

Because of the buzz created around chia seeds in different forms of media, more and more people want to try out chia seeds and enjoy the health benefits they offer. But there are also plenty of skeptics out there who still question whether chia seeds really do have health benefits. Well, there are now several studies to prove that including chia seeds in your diet can actually make you healthier.

One health expert summed it up best when he said you can live off of just chia seeds, because they’re just that healthy. A lot of people find this very hard to believe. After all, it simply sounds too good to be true. But the thing is, you do not have to eat a whole lot of chia seeds to meet your daily nutrition needs. A couple of servings of chia seeds in your daily diet can go a long way, provided you keep the other foods you eat in check.

To give you an overview of how healthy chia seeds truly are, just take a look at these numbers. An ounce of chia seeds contains 5 grams of Omega-3, 11 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein and only 137 calories. It also contains minerals such as Calcium (18% of RDA), Manganese, (30% of RDA), Magnesium (30% of RDA) and Phosphorus (27% of RDA). It’s pretty difficult to find another food that can give you all this. It is also important to note that chia seeds are grown organically and they are also naturally gluten free.

Chia SeedsSo how do chia seeds benefit your liver? One study conducted by researchers from the University of Queensland, Australia explains this. They did an experiment in which they fed rats with chia seed supplements.

They found that the rats were protected from heart and liver problems associated with a high fat diet following supplementation. The rats also had improved insulin sensitivity, decreased liver fat, and enhanced glucose tolerance.

This is all thanks to healthy Omega-3 fatty acids found in chia seeds. Alpha-linolenic acid omega-3 is an essential fatty acid which the body cannot make on its own. Because of this, you have to get it from your diet. Good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids include soy beans, walnuts, flax seed, and of course chia seeds. The recommended daily intake of ALA is 1.6 grams for men and 1.1 gram for women per day.

In the study, the rats had a high fat and high carbohydrate diet. They also had low levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. Metabolic, cardiac and liver changes were monitored over the course of the experiment. As you may know, a diet high in fat is associated with a wealth of health issues including hypertension, reduced glucose and insulin tolerance, fatty livers, and cardiac fibrosis.

Chia SeedsThe researchers found that the rats who were supplemented with chia seeds improved their insulin and glucose tolerance and reduced cardiac and hepatic fibrosis. The rats also did not have any changes in blood pressure.

The experts said that this shows consuming chia seeds can be beneficial for one’s health as it offers cardio-protection and hepato-protection. There is no question that more research is needed to come up with conclusive evidence that chia seeds really do provide several health benefits.

But even if you discredit current researches, you cannot deny that it wouldn’t hurt to include chia seeds in one’s diet. It can only do you good, unless you have an allergic reaction to it. In most cases, those who have an allergic reaction to mustard seed is also allergic to chia seeds.

Some also suggest that those with low blood pressure avoid taking chia seeds. Pregnant women may also want to steer clear of chia seeds. It is highly recommended that you talk with your doctor first to ensure that taking chia seeds won’t have any adverse effects on your pregnancy. And make sure that if you do take chia seeds as a dietary supplement, stick with the recommended doses.
